In the lead-up to their FIFA World Cup final match against Argentina on Sunday, France forward Karim Benzema could make an unexpected return to the World Cup squad.
Due to a thigh injury sustained during the training camp, Benzema was previously ruled out of the World Cup. After that, he took an immediate flight back to Madrid for his recuperation, after which the FIFA World Cup dropped his name.
The 34-year-old experienced a muscle tear and was allowed a three-week recuperation period. He thought he would be replaced in the squad when he left Doha. Along with other team members Paul Pogba, Lucas Hernandez, Presnel Kimpembe, N'Golo Kante, and Christopher Nkunku, he was unable to participate in the tournament due to injuries.
However, the Ballon d'Or winner is currently participating in club training, and Mundo Deportivo reports that he may be brought back in time for the game against Argentina this weekend.
According to the newspaper, Real Madrid is happy to let the striker go back to Qatar. The decision now rests with Deschamps, who has used a number of attacking players to help his team emerge as one of the best teams in the 2022 tournament despite numerous setbacks caused by injuries to key players in the weeks leading up to the competition.
Deschamps did not respond directly when asked about the possibility after France's victory over Morocco; instead, he simply stated, "I'd like to proceed to the next question."
Benzema is France's all-time leading scorer at the 2014 World Cup, scoring 37 goals in 97 appearances.
