We will support INEC and guarantee credible elections – US government

The Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, and ensuring free, fair, and credible general elections in 2023 are the stated objectives of the United States government.

This was said by Will Stevens, the Consul General of the United States Mission in Lagos, at an interactive session on Wednesday at the American Corner in Lagos to celebrate the US-Africa Leaders Summit 2022.

He continued, "The US government is also committed to providing adequate support for INEC to conduct peaceful, nonviolent elections."

In the meantime, Stevens has urged Nigerians to take responsibility for their actions and get involved in the country's political process in order to influence the desired change.

"Be responsible for the issues that are existing and emerging in your community," he advised. You can't complain about the problem if you don't take responsibility for it in society.

"In the elections of 2023, we do not have a preferred candidate. Our objective is to safeguard the people's votes and ensure a conducive environment.

He continued, "The US government is also working to ensure that politicians accept the election results."

Remember that this week, nearly 50 African leaders and delegates arrived in Washington for the US-Africa Leaders Summit 2022, a significant summit hosted by President Joe Biden.

The Summit is part of a major effort by the US government to reestablish and strengthen ties with African nations, whose ties to China have grown.
